Rauw Alejandro
In the year 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track at the time within the space of six months. This mix of reggaeton and pop music not only brought interest back to this genre but also to Latin music generally. In 2015 there were only two mostly songs with Spanish lyrics on the Billboard Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. In the midst of the Despacito's popularity in 2017 there were 19 mostly Spanish tracks which made it into the top 100. In 2020, the number was 41. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish-language version in 2017 shortly after which popular artists began working with reggaeton artists. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to produce MIA (2018), while Madonna worked on Medellin with Maluma (2019). In 2020, several Reggaeton artists were complaining about the trend of the genre toward the mainstream. But a newer generation such as Rauw Alejandro was determined to keep the trend going. He used elements from other styles and electronic music.
